Dewi Melanting Stuns Bali Markets with Royal Grace and Trading Genius
Dewi Melanting, also known as Ida Bhatari Melanting, appears under the royal title Ratu Ayu Mas Melanting though she was born Dyah Ayu Swabhawa. She is famed for her keen business sense, wise counsel, and an elegance that won her loyal customers.
Her father, Dang Hyang Nirartha, departed Java when the Majapahit kingdom fell and Islamic influence swept the island. He carried his family on the voyage across the Bali Strait and held honorifics including Dang Hyang Dwijendra and Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh.
On the way, Dang Hyang Biyang Patni Keniten, then heavily pregnant, found each step draining as her joints swelled and throbbed. Facing a painful decision, Nirartha pressed on. He took the children who still had strength and left his wife, young Dyah Ayu and a handful of attendants in a riverside clearing. He pledged to send a party back for them once he reached the settlement.
After landing on Bali, he dispatched messengers to lead his wife and children to join his new camp. Meanwhile Patni Keniten’s group rested, cleared a plot for dwellings and planted rice. Armed with deep spiritual insight and gifts said to be granted by her husband, she guided locals in farming methods, healing rites and ritual practices. Word spread fast and she drew thousands of followers, earning the title of community matriarch.
The group welcomed Patni Keniten’s newborn son, Bagus Bajra, noted for his handsome features. Their eldest, Dyah Ayu Swabhawa, blossomed into a striking young woman whose authority and poise matched her father’s reputation.
She showed an intuitive grasp of trade, selecting wares that captivated buyers and keeping customers returning day after day. The clearing evolved into a key trading hub.
Hope lingered for news from Dang Hyang Nirartha. Each dawn Dyah Ayu climbed a banyan tree and scanned the horizon for any sign of his messenger. Her fondness for swinging among the branches inspired villagers to honor her with the name Dyah Ayu Melanting.
Years rolled by with no word. Stricken by longing, Patni Keniten knelt at the local shrine and pleaded with the gods to spare her people from age and decline. Moved by her devotion they granted her wish but decreed that she would exist unseen by human eyes.
When Dang Hyang Nirartha reached the southern coast at Uluwatu Temple he believed his family had perished. He only learned of their fate after discovering that Keniten’s moksa site had been named Pura Pulaki in tribute to her title Mpu Alaki. Dyah Ayu Melanting is revered at Melanting Temple and Bagus Bajra is enshrined at Kerta Kawat Temple as Prince Mentang Yuda, overseer of justice.
