By nine most nights, the staff have gone home, the lanterns along the path are lit and steady, and the garden should be finished for the day. It isn’t. Somewhere past the last lantern, low over the lily pond at the edge of the pool deck, a small green-gold light blinks on. Then another, further back near the ferns. Within a few minutes there are a dozen of them, drifting slow and low, like the garden decided to keep one string of lights for itself after everyone else went to bed.

Fireflies aren’t rare in Ubud, but they’re particular. They favor the still, humid nights that follow a good rain, and they keep close to water — which makes the lily pond and the damp grass at the garden’s edge their preferred stage. Guests almost never expect them. Half the time someone on the terrace asks quietly if that’s a reflection, and it takes a second blink, unhurried and unmistakably alive, to answer the question.

Our gardener, who sweeps the paths clean every morning before you wake, is the one who taught us where to look. He calls them the garden’s second shift — the lanterns handle the paths, and after that it’s the fireflies’ turn near the water.
